The 14th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) will held in Nanning of China on September 12-15, which will take on a new look and present new business opportunities for China and the 10 ASEAN countries.
A press conference for the 14th CAEXPO was held by the Information Office of the State Council of China in Beijing on July 10, attracting H.E. Mr. Qian Kemning, vice minister of commerce of China, H.E. Mr. Yin Zonghua, vice chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and H.E. Mr. Zhang Xiaoqin, vice governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the permanent host province of the CAEXPO.
New progress is made in economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN on the CAEXPO platform. According to Vice Minister Qian Keming, the bilateral trade between China and ASEAN registered US$452.2 billion in 2016. China remains the largest trading partner of ASEAN, and ASEAN, the third largest trading partner, the fourth largest export market and the second largest import source for China. In 2017, the bilateral trade maintains a strong momentum, hitting US$195.66 billion during the first 5 months. Till May 2017, two-way investment between China and ASEAN exceeded US$183 billion. In 2016, China’s direct investment to ASEAN countries reached US$9.31 billion, US$3 billion more than that made by ASEAN in China. The bilateral cooperation in infrastructure and connectivity boasts great potential and conduces to sustainable social advancement and economic growth on both sides. Till the end of May 2017, China has signed agreements on infrastructure projects with ASEAN countries with a total contractual investment volume of US$296.27 billion and a turnover worth US$204 billion. China actively participates in the cooperation programs led by ASEAN, including the China-ASEAN 10+1, the ASEAN-China-Japan-ROK 10+3 and the East Asia economic cooperation, and allows ASEAN people to share the benefits of China’s development and regional economic integration. Mr. Qian said that China would enhance collaboration with ASEAN countries to further cement and upgrade the CAEXPO, making it a more effective platform for building the Belt and Road routes and forging the China-ASEAN Community of Shared Destiny.
The CAEXPO practically promotes friendly exchange and cooperation between China and ASEAN and grows to become a brand of the host province. Vice Governor Zhang Xiaoqin said, when having inspection tour in Guangxi in April, President Xi Jinping acclaimed the CAEXPO and the CABIS which have been successfully held for 13 sessions by far as brands of the province and important platforms for deepening mutual opening-up between China and ASEAN. Such high appraisal also means new and higher demands on the CAEXPO.
According to Mr. Zhang, the 14th CAEXPO 2017 will continue to prioritize exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN, including:
●  To uphold the concept of China-ASEAN community of win-win cooperation and produce more regional public products that are widely recognized and accepted by all stakeholders of this region;
●  To design and improve its exhibitions and events based on the needs and demands for upgrading the China-ASEAN FTA and create more tangible business opportunities for enterprises on both sides;
●   To improve the main exposition taking place in September and host more successful specialized exhibitions at home and abroad, putting into place more effective mechanisms of exhibition organization;
●  To press ahead with innovation, allowing the CAEXPO to come up with new highlights and achievements year by year; and
●  To expand and enrich cultural and people-to-people exchanges, establish more efficient mechanisms for bilateral cooperation and add to the Nanning Channel for China-ASEAN cooperation more new concepts and functions.
The 14th CAEXPO will adopt new contents to build the Belt and Road. As said by Mr. Zhang, this year marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and the China-ASEAN Year of Tourism Cooperation. The 14th CAEXPO will feature “Jointly building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, Promoting Regional Economic Integration through Tourism” as its theme. It will, for the very first time, set up a Belt and Road Pavilion, open to countries along the routes. The National Commission of Reform and Development of China, the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China will jointly host the series events on international production capacity cooperation as the previous years. And a display zone of smart equipment manufacturing will be set up for the first time, showcasing UAV, smart robots, 3D printing technologies, smart consumer electronics, etc. to promote industrial upgrading within the China-ASEAN region. The Ministry of Commerce will host an exhibition on silk and related products.
Brunei Darussalam is the Country of Honor for the 14th CAEXPO, the second time for the country to do so. Kazakhstan is the Special Partner, also the first time for a country along the Silk Road Economic Belt to be the CAEXPO special partner at invitation. The CAEXPO will lend new impetus to the cooperation between countries in Southeast Asia, Central Asia and West Asia and that between countries along the Belt and Road routes.
30 forums and conferences will be held this year, with 21 ones taking place concurrently with the 14th CAEXPO. Among them, new ones include the China-ASEAN Forum on Maritime Tourism Cooperation sponsored by the State Oceanic Administration of China, the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Spatial Information Corridor Projects sponsored by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense of China, and the China-ASEAN Forum on Disaster Prevention and Reduction and Sustainable Development sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology. The China-ASEAN Information Harbor Forum will have a sideline event on e-commerce, and the Ministry of Commerce will host the China-Kazakhstan Cooperation Forum.
With a new exhibition hall of 12,000m2 put into use at the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center, the 14th CAEXPO will cover a total exhibition area of 122,000m2 and will have 6500 booths from 5800 ones of last year. The exhibition area for ASEAN countries and other countries will increase by 3000m2, a record high compared to the previous years. Temporary direct charted flights will continue to be arranged between Nanning and the ASEAN countries.
The 14th CABIS will host an array of high-end events. Vice Chairman Yin Zonghua of the CCPIT said, the CABIS has grown to be an important platform for dialogue between political and business communities and for cooperation in economy, investment and trade between China and ASEAN, greatly driving regional economic integration. The 14th CABIS will work to meet the shared desire of Chinese and ASEAN businesses for strengthening collaboration under the Belt and Road framework and will give prominence on tourism and other major fields for bilateral cooperation. It will host roundtable talks between the Brunei visiting leader and Chinese CEOs, the China-ASEAN Business Chambers Forum, the Forum on East ASEAN Growth Area, the China-ASEAN Symposium on Commercial Laws and the China-ASEAN Cross-border E-commerce Forum, so as to facilitate exchange of business information, mobilize more Chinese enterprises to invest in ASEAN, expand export of made-in-ASEAN products to China and forge a more business-friendly environment together with the ASEAN countries.
